UK-Kenya Trade & Investment Forum

On December 3rd, at Mansion House, London, Developing Markets Associates (DMA) and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in association with the Government of Kenya hosted the UK-Kenya Trade and Investment Forum to mark the 50th anniversary of Kenya's independence.

This very well-received event was attended by over 400 delegates including key stakeholders and high level representatives from both the public and private sector.

Opening addresses were given by Atam Sandhu, Chief Executive of Developing Markets Associates, Fiona Woolf, Lord Mayor of the City of London, Rt Hon Mark Simmonds MP, Foreign Office Minister of Africa, HE Ephraim Ngare, Kenyan High Commissioner to the UK, Alderman Sir Paul Judge, Sheriff of the City of London, Jeremy Awori, Chief Executive Officer of Barclays Kenya and Galib Virani, Director of Afren East Africa Exploration and Professor Njuguna S. Ndungu, Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya.

The opening session, chaired by HMA Dr Christian Turner, UK High Commissioner to Kenya, provided an overview of the investment climate in Kenya and included presentations from Professor Njuguna S. Ndungu, Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya, Professor Gituro Wainaina, Director General of Kenya Vision 2030 Delivery Secretariat, Jeff Cable, Head of Africa Fixed Income, Barclays, John Small, Chief Executive of Eastern Africa Association and Kiprono Kittony, Chairman of Kenya Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The following session provided an overview of investment opportunities in Energy, Renewables and Mining and was chaired by James Duddridge, Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Africa. Presentations given in these sessions were from Silvester Kasuku, Managing Director/CEO of LAPSSET Corridor Development Authority, Merlin Figueira, General Manager, VTTI Kenya, Ian Williamson, Vice-President Commerical, Senergy and Gareth O'Hagen, Head of Extractives, Adam Smith International.

The last session provided an overview of investing in Infrastructure for Development & Tourism and was chaired by Lord David Steel, Member of the House of Lords. Presentation were made by Dr Ibrahim Mohamed, Principal Secretary of Commerce and Tourism, Ministry of East African Affairs, Commerce & Tourism, Government of Kenya, Daniel Ngumy, Senior Principal, Anjarwalla & Khanna and Ewan Cameron, Chief Executive of Lonrho Hotels.

The forum was then closed by HMA Dr Christian Turner, UK High Commissioner to Kenya, Professor Gituro Wainaina, Director General of Kenya Vision 2030 Delivery Secretariat and Henry Bellingham MP, Member of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Africa before guests were invited to take part in the gala networking reception.
